A school vision screening is not an eye exam

A school vision screening is not a comprehensive eye exam. The screening checks whether a child can read letters at a distance. An exam at Fairview Eyecare in Allen also checks focusing, how the eyes work together, and the health of the eye itself.

A comprehensive eye exam asks different questions. Can the eyes focus up close and hold it? Do the two eyes aim at the same point? Is the prescription equal in both eyes, or is one eye quietly falling behind? Is the inside of the eye healthy? None of that fits in a screening.

Farsighted children are the classic miss. They can often muscle their way through a distance chart, then fatigue when the work is on a desk. The screening says they passed. Homework says otherwise.

If the school sends a referral, book it. If the school sends a pass and you still have a feeling, book it anyway. Fairview Eyecare is on Stacy Road in Allen, a few minutes from Fairview and Lucas, and pediatric exams are a normal part of the week — not a specialty you have to drive to Dallas for.
